THE FIRE BREATHING SALAMANDER by Judy Schwenk

In ancient lore, a salamander was thought to have the ability to extinguish fire with its cool body. It was also thought to live in fire and be toxic.
It is true that salamanders, being amphibians, have cool bodies. Some excrete toxins if frightened. And, salamanders like moist rotten wood, and were probably seen scurrying from the fire when that wood was thrown into the flames.
