Hall has been collecting and researching both uniform buttons and Goodyear rubber buttons for many years. Though many factors have been proposed to explain the failure of Napoleon’s 1812 Russian campaign, it has also been linked to something as small as a button-a tin button, the kind that fastened everything from the greatcoats of Napoleon’s officers to the trousers of his foot soldiers. When temperatures drop below 56°F, tin crumbles into powder. Were the soldiers of the Grande Armée fatally weakened by cold because the buttons of their uniforms fell apart? How different our world might be if tin did not disintegrate at low temperatures and the French had continued their eastward expansion! This fascinating book tells the stories of seventeen molecules that, like the tin of those buttons, greatly influenced the course of history. | History |

ISBN: 978-0873385121 | Hard cover. 614 pages, 242 photographs. In Dressed for the Photographer, Joan Severa gives a visual analysis of the dress of middle-class Americans from the mid-to-late 19th century. Using images and writings, she shows how even economically disadvantaged Americans could wear styles within a year or so of current fashion. Smylie, Eric | BUTTONS OF THE CANADIAN MILITIA, ARMY, NAVAL AND AIR FORCES, 1900-1990. ISBN: 978-1551250045 | Paperback. 108 pages. For collectors and enthusiasts, this book provides a look into an area of military collecting that is largely undocumented. Though medals awarded to Canadians and the badges of the Canadian armed forces have long been collected and valued, the field of Canadian military button collecting has been long overlooked, and available books and publications on this subject are virtually non-existent. With a view to rectifying this situation, Eric Smylie traces the history of the military button from the late nineteenth century to the last decade of the twentieth. Included are buttons from General Service, the Corps, the Mounted and Foot Regiments Overseas Service Battalions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force, Naval and Air Services, etc. | Uniform, Canadian |

Wilkinson-Latham, R.J. | DISCOVERING BRITISH MILITARY BADGES AND BUTTONS, VOLUME 148. 1999. ISBN: 978-0747804840 | Paperback. 88 pages. This book first examines the development of the various styles of military head-dress badge from 1751, when the use of private crests and badges was forbidden, to the introduction of ‘cap badges’ in 1894. From that date, every style of badge for each regiment of the regular Army is described or illustrated. Through the turbulent years of the First World War, and the reductions and amalgamations of the years following, the effects on badge design are detailed. Buttons are dealt with from the first order to number buttons in 1767, through the era of numbered buttons, to the newly designed buttons adopted in 1881, bearing a regimental badge. The continuing story of both badges and buttons reflects subsequent reorganisations of the Army and is brought up to the present day with the new badges designed for the brigade system of 1958, the large regiments of the 1970s and the radical Army reorganisations and amalgamations since 1990. | Uniform, British |
