Peking Glass

Description

Peking glass, a traditional Chinese glass art, is renowned for its vibrant colors, dense composition, and intricate carvings. Originating during the Qing Dynasty, it features layered (overlay) glass, often in multiple colors, allowing artisans to carve detailed patterns, exposing contrasting layers. The glass is typically lead-based, making it malleable and easier to carve. Peking glass is non-porous, highly durable, and polished to a glossy finish. It is used to create decorative items like snuff bottles, vases, and figurines. This craft combines artistic finesse with cultural symbolism, reflecting China’s rich heritage.
