This Satsuma button features a tree peony—a flower long admired in Chinese culture as a symbol of honor, wealth, and nobility. In Japan, the tree peony is also treasured, and it carries a delightful linguistic twist: it’s called botan (牡丹 / ぼたん)—the exact same pronunciation as the word for buttons (ボタン).
A clever rebus, perhaps? This botan is quite literally a botan on a button.

This is a jet button. Lighter in weight than glass. If you find one among a stash of black glass buttons, you’re very lucky.

The original Bethlehem Pearl Button Catalog advertised in the Just Buttons magazine in the 1970s lists this button, labeled #203 as Rabbit. However, the animal on the left doesn’t quite look like a rabbit. After consulting with the WBA Tuesday group on Zoom with Simone and Jolceyn, we have decided that this button features a rabbit and a goat. There’s a fable about this duo:
